Diablo Ballet Announces 22nd Season

2015-2016 Program Line-up to Include George Balanchine’s Apollo, Premieres and a new production of Carnival of the Animals

(Walnut Creek, CA) — Diablo Ballet is pleased to announce its 22nd season of the Power of Dance to feature works by George Balanchine, Val Caniparoli, alumna Tina Kay Bohnstedt and a new production of Carnival of the Animals by Resident Choreographer/Dancer Robert Dekkers. The Company will also present the 2015 Edition of A Swingin’ Holiday by Sean Kelly performed by the Diablo Ballet Swing Orchestra under the musical direction of Greg Sudmeier.

Diablo Ballet’s 22nd Season begins November 13th, 2015 at the Del Valle Theatre in Walnut Creek with the Diablo Ballet premiere of the pas de deux from Tchaikovsy Dances by award winning choreographer Norbert Vesak set to Tchaikovsky’ score from the opera, Eugene Onegin, made famous by the internationally-adored duo Cynthia Gregory and Fernando Bujones. Resident Choreographer Robert Dekkers presents a reprisal of his AnOther, to Yann Tiersen’s music from the film, Amelie. Also on the program is the 2015 Edition of A Swingin’ Holiday, created in 2012 by Sean Kelly, former resident choreographer for the national tour of the musical Billy Elliot and former principal of Houston Ballet. Set to the exhilarating music of the 30’s and 40’s, enjoy your favorite holiday tunes by legends Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, Nat “King” Cole, and Wynton Marsalis, as well as jazzy renditions of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, performed by the Diablo Ballet Swing Orchestra, under the musical direction of Greg Sudmeier.

Diablo Ballet’s season continues with Precision and Balance February 5-6, 2016 at the Del Valle Theatre in Walnut Creek with the full production of Apollo by George Balanchine, My Way by beloved company alumna Tina Kay Bohnstedt, set to Frank Sinatra, and Milieu by Robert Dekkers, set to a live performance of a commissioned score by Daniel Berkman. Each performance is followed by an exlusive complimentary reception with tasty gourmet delicacies and Peet’s Coffee, with an opportunity for the audience members to get up close and personal with the artists.

On March 17, 2016, Diablo Ballet will celebrate its 22nd Anniversary and St. Patrick’s Day with a special performance at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. Featuring stunning works from the Ballet’s 22-year history, the celebration includes Tears from Above by renowned dance maker Val Caniparoli, Sérénade pour Cordes et Corps by dy­namic award-winning Canadian choreographer Sonya Delwaide, the romantic pas de deux and finale from La Fille Mal Gardée, and a breathtaking World Premiere by Robert Dekkers in collaboration with film-maker, Walter Yamazaki. Following the performance will be a Gala reception, wine tasting and sumptuous dinner with the dancers at Scott’s Garden, walking distance from the Lesher Center.

The season concludes with Celebrated Masters May 6-7, 2016 at Del Valle Theatre featuring the Diablo Ballet with a new production of Carnival of the Animals set to the music of romantic French composer Saint-Saëns and choreographed by Robert Dekkers, the breathtaking Hamlet and Ophelia by acclaimed dance maker Val Ca­niparoli, and a new work by Isadora Duncan Dance Award winner Gary Masters. Dance Magazine named Masters “one of the most gifted performers in contempo­rary dance.” A complimentary dessert, and  Peet’s Coffee post-performance reception will offer an opportunity to mingle with the dancers and artistic staff.
