The 2012 R-16 World Finals were held this past weekend on July 8th and 9th, 2012, in Seoul, Korea. R-16, which started out as a single World Championship-level B-boy tournament to encourage the development and creativity of urban youth in Seoul, South Korea, has since evolved into a worldwide movement. In this championship event, where contestants battle in 4 categories of Popping, Locking, B-Boy, or B-Boy Crew, 16 countries from around the world were represented following a year of qualifications and training.
One of the finalists, representing the USA in the Popping category, was none other than Leigh Foaad (aka Breeze-Lee) a 2x Pop’n champion for Battle of the Belts in Los Angeles, CA. Breeze-Lee’s impressive resume includes Co-Founder, Co-Artistic Director, and Choreographer for Versa-Style Dance Company, an LA-based dance ensemble that fuses such Hip-Hop styles as House, Pop’n’, Lock’n, Wack’n and Boogaloo with Afro-Latin styles like Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia and Afro- Cuban. He has also toured nationally and internationally with John Tesh as a featured dancer, has choreographed & was featured in the PBS special “ALIVE Music & Dance”, and has worked with the East Coast’s Rennie Harris “Puremovement” since 2005. From birth, Leigh Foaad has been exposed to dance. Leigh currently teaches Hip-Hop at the Jonette Swider Dance Center in Sherman Oaks, CA, but his vocabulary encompasses a broad variety of styles which includes classical ballet.
